Gluten Free SuperBowl and SnowPocolypse 2015

~

It’s definitely been a bit since I’ve updated, and I apologize about that! January has proven to be a rough and tough month, and I’m hoping February will have the answers I’m desperately seeking! While I’m typing this, our area is under a Winter Weather Warning, due to the expected 14” of snow for us. Now, that’s nothing for the upper East, as they’ve just gotten over three FEET of snow…but people around here are panicking and buying milk, bread, and beer like the world’s shutting down!

And, of course, it’s SuperBowl weekend! Our team has gone through the ringer, for sure. Yes, we are Patriots fan. No, we’re not keen on the cheating scandal….but….as with all of the other scandals the NFL has had to face (ahem: rapists, murderers, dog murderers, other cheating QBs, and the like) we figure it’s all in game, in the grand scheme of things. Today, I read on someone’s Facebook page that “cheating was only bad if the team got caught, and since they got caught, they should be disqualified.” Hmph. Well, all that for ball air, in a game where the other team forgot to show up? And then the rapists keep playing? And the dog murderers come back like nothing happened, after a few monetary fees paid? I think not! Anyway, don’t tread on me about it…. It’s a game I watch for a few hours of entertainment, and then it’s over.

For our football festivities, we’ll be having a number of gluten free goodies! A few new recipes, I’m thinking, are in order, too!! Taquitos, Chocolaty Football Mix, Cheese-ball, and mini-sliders are just a few of the planned items on the menu! Who knows what all I’ll come up with!! Stay tuned for the blog on all the snacks we made!!

Hey, Surprise! There’s Gluten in Your Meds!

Hey, Surprise! There’s Gluten in Your Meds!

~

I know. And I sort of hope you were sitting down before you read that. It happens less frequently now than it used to, but it does still happen. Whether it’s your prescription, or your favorite over-the-counter box of cold meds, if you’re super sensitive to gluten, you should probably call the company or check out GlutenFreeMeds.com to see if it’s on their list, at the least.

Maybe you’re wondering why there would be gluten in your medication? It’s simple, and sort of the same reason why there is gluten in spices, shampoo, lotions, and makeup. It’s a binding agent in many things. In this case, it helps make your pills stay together.

If any of the prescription or OTC medications you take have any of these ingredients, you may want to further your investigating skills and verify for the sake of your body.

  • Wheat
  • Modified starch (source not specified)
  • Pregelatinized starch (source not specified)
  • Pregelatinized modified starch (source not specified)
  • Dextrates (source not specified)
  • Dextrimaltose (when barley malt is used)
  • Caramel coloring (when barley malt is used)
  • Dextrin (source not specified, but usually by corn or potato)

Pharmacists face many dilemmas in the gluten-free world. There are no requirements for companies to label their medicines as “gluten free,” or just what they contain. In the same breath, all gluten sensitivities are different, and that 1 particle of gluten dust may not do much to Suzy, but it was enough to put Tom in the hospital. It is also true that medications don’t work the same way in a body without a gluten issue, as they do in a body that severely reacts to gluten. I just don’t feel it should be left up to the pharmacist to decipher, and I think that put them into a bad spot, as well.

More and more, we’re seeing the push to ban GMOs, and label things appropriately for allergens. I am hopeful that even more labeling will be approved to fully label prescriptions, shampoos, and anything else that is used by humans containing gluten. I’ve learned through my years of personal experience, and that of my child’s, that gluten, GMOs, and the harsh chemicals in our world ARE affecting our bodies, and creating internal disasters that no one knows how to deal with.

So, just a gentle reminder, fellow Celiac sufferers- CHECK YOUR MEDS!!

Gluten Free for Me OH, FORKS!! Cook Book Minor Catastrophes

GF4M COVER1

Gluten Free for Me OH, FORKS!! Cook Book Minor Catastrophes

~

As with many published cook book, books, novels, and even the occasional slip up in adult reading materials…we’ve found a few part of the cook book that were either left out, forgotten, or misprinted! This page will be updated as things come to our attention, and we’ll fix the main files and double check these issues before we print again!

If you’ve tried a recipe, and something was missing or didn’t seem right, please send us a message! That said, remember that cooking gluten free is trickier than “normal” cooking, and until you’ve tested our recipes a time or two, things may not turn out perfectly! This sort of “issue” is NOT what we are referring to on this page!! However, you can message us cooking issues, too, and we’ll try to help!

 Here’s the Missing Info!!

*Mexican Wedding Cookie Balls, page 172: missing: note after -1 cup confectioners’ sugar (1/2 mixed into dough, ½ used to coat cookies after baking.)

*Cinnamon Rolls, page 29: missing: Step #8- For immediate cooking, allow to rise at room temperature for one to two hours. Bake at 325 degrees for 15-25 minutes, depending on your oven’s temperature. For cooking in the morning: After cutting dough, and covering with plastic wrap, put dough in refrigerator overnight. Allow to rise in 200 degree oven for at least one hour before baking.

Thank You for Your Patience and Understanding!

Gluten Free for Me Upcoming Taste Testing & Updates!

~

We’re in 2015 now, which means this year we’ll be participating in our first book signings, taste testing, and local events around the area! If creating the recipes, designing the cook, formatting the layout, making the nutrition labels and working on images wasn’t hard enough… now I’ve got to decide which foods to make in mass for people to try at our events!!

For this, I’ve decided to not decide myself, and let my followers and cook book owners help me figure it out! You’ll find a Google Form attached in this blog update (that I will post on our Facebook page eventually, too) that you can fill out to help me with this process! Don’t worry- you’re not signing up for anything at all. Just helping me to choose which recipes to consider for my early 2015 events!

For the first form, I’d like to get an idea of what your favorite recipes in the cook book, on our Facebook page, or from our blog are. If you’ve tried something in the cook book you love, please enter that in this form. After I get a general idea of “favorites,” I’ll then send out one last form choosing the “winners.”

USE THIS LINK FOR OUR GOOGLE FORM! OR, check our Facebook page for the link!!
